Our guide

Discover Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik was an independent merchant republic for four centuries, Venice's rival, and the Walls of Dubrovnik still run two kilometres above the roofs. The Knežev dvor, the Rector's Palace, housed a head of state elected for one month only — the Republic distrusted personal power. The Palača Sponza, customs house and mint, survived the 1667 earthquake that destroyed almost everything else. Fort Lovrijenac stands on a rock outside the walls, and the Assumption Cathedral closes the old town.

When to go

May, June and September: warm, bright, and without the saturation of July and August, when cruise ships unload several thousand visitors a day into an old town of a few hectares. October stays mild. Winter is quiet and wet, many places close, but the city returns to its residents.

Getting around

The old town is pedestrian and crosses in ten minutes; it is all polished marble, slippery in rain. It is also entirely steps once you leave the central street. Buses link the port, the airport and the beaches. The cable car climbs Mount Srđ for the overview. No car enters the walls.

Where to eat

The cooking is Dalmatian: grilled fish, squid, Ston oysters, olive oil and wine from the Pelješac peninsula. Peka, meat or octopus cooked under an iron bell covered in embers, is ordered hours ahead. Prices inside the walls are a cruise destination's: two streets away changes everything. No halal address is listed.

Good to know

The euro is the currency, since 2023. The city is small and heavily visited: checking the cruise-ship calendar before choosing your days is the single most useful piece of advice. The marble streets are treacherous when damp. And the wall circuit is done early or late — there is no shade at all and summer makes it punishing.
