Our guide

Discover Sydney

Sydney is organised around its harbour, and it is from the water that it makes sense. The Sydney Opera House, whose concrete shells took fourteen years to find a buildable form, and the Sydney Harbour Bridge answer each other across the water. The Royal Botanic Garden runs down to the shore beside it. Darling Harbour occupies the old freight docks. Further out, Bondi Beach is not a postcard beach but a neighbourhood one, extended by a coastal path that reaches Coogee Beach in a two-hour walk.

When to go

Southern hemisphere. September to November and March to May are the two best windows: warm without excess, the sea already or still workable. The austral summer, December to February, is hot and can pass 40 °C in a heatwave. Winter stays mild, around 17 °C by day, with frequently clear skies — swimming becomes a matter for the brave, the rest is unchanged.

Getting around

An Opal card, or simply a contactless bank card, opens trains, buses, light rail and ferries. The ferries are not an attraction but real transport, and the most pleasant: crossing the harbour costs the price of a ticket. The centre walks well. The beaches are reached by bus or train depending on direction, and the coastal path links the eastern ones to each other.

Where to eat

Coffee is taken seriously: the flat white came out of this region and local roasting has spread as far as London. Brunch is a late-morning institution, not a missed breakfast. Fish and seafood lead the menu, and Asian immigration has given the city a depth of cuisines no European capital of comparable size matches. Only four halal addresses are listed in our data.

Good to know

The Australian dollar is the currency and contactless payment is the norm. The UV index is the real subject: the ozone layer is thinner at this latitude and sunburn arrives in twenty minutes, out of season included — hat, cream, shade. At the beach, swim between the red and yellow flags: they mark the patrolled zone and account for rip currents, the leading cause of drowning here. Tipping is not expected.
