Our guide

Discover Prague

Prague came through the 20th century without being bombed, and it shows: the centre is Gothic, Baroque and Art Nouveau, intact. Everything turns around the Charles Bridge, begun in 1357, which joins the old town to the castle — the largest castle complex in the world, crowned by St Vitus Cathedral.

When to go

May to June, and September. Summer brings a considerable crowd onto the Charles Bridge and the Old Town Square. Winter is cold, but Prague under snow with its Christmas markets earns the coat — and prices fall.

Getting around

The historic centre is walked end to end, and has to be: cobbled streets and lanes were never meant for cars. Tram 22 climbs to the castle and spares you the hill. Metro and trams are efficient and cheap.

Where to eat

Czech cooking is hearty — pork, cabbage, knedlíky — and pairs with some of Europe's best beer, often cheaper than mineral water. Be wary of restaurants opening straight onto the Old Town Square: a few streets away the quality rises and the price halves.

Good to know

The koruna is still the currency: do not accept euro prices at the exchange shops in the centre, where the rates are poor. Admission runs from 8 to 45 €. Only three halal addresses are listed — few, and worth planning around.
