Our guide

Discover New York

New York runs on a grid, which makes it unexpectedly easy to read: avenues north-south, streets east-west, and you always know where you are. Manhattan holds most of it — Empire State, Central Park, the Met, Grand Central — but Brooklyn starts just across the bridge, and the walk over is worth taking.

When to go

April to June, September to November. Summer is hot and heavy, winter genuinely cold — though the city is beautiful under snow and rates drop in January and February.

Getting around

The subway runs 24 hours, which is rare. An OMNY card or MetroCard covers it. Walking often beats a cab in Midtown at rush hour — twenty blocks is roughly a kilometre.

Where to eat

Katz's Delicatessen has served pastrami since 1888, Lombardi's claims the first pizzeria in the United States, Delmonico's is among the country's oldest restaurants. These are touristy and good at once, which is not a contradiction here.

Good to know

Museums close one day a week, varying by institution — the planner handles it. Sales tax and tipping are not in the displayed price: budget 20 to 30 % above the menu. Twenty-five halal addresses are listed, not counting the countless street halal carts.
