Discover Milan

Milan does badly with people looking for a postcard: it is a city of work, fashion and design more than monuments. But it holds two exceptional ones — the Duomo, a Gothic cathedral bristling with spires whose roof you can walk, and Leonardo's Last Supper at Santa Maria delle Grazie. The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II joins the Duomo to La Scala under an 1877 glass roof.

When to go

April to June, September to October. Summer is hot and humid and the city empties in August. Winter is foggy and cold, but it is La Scala's season. Avoid Fashion Week and April's Salone del Mobile, when hotel prices triple.

Getting around

The metro covers the city well and the centre walks. The historic tram, with its wooden carriages from the 1920s, still runs in normal service — line 1 is the handsome one.

Where to eat

Saffron risotto alla milanese and ossobuco are the local classics. The aperitivo is more of an institution here than anywhere else in Italy: from six to nine, one paid drink opens a buffet, particularly around the Navigli.

Good to know

The Last Supper books **months** ahead: the fifteen-minute slots go as soon as they open and there is no queue on the day. Go up onto the Duomo's roof terraces; the view earns the ticket. Admission runs from 6 to 45 €. Four halal addresses are listed.
