Our guide

Discover Dublin

Dublin is a capital at human scale — you can cross it on foot in an hour. The Book of Kells, a 9th-century illuminated manuscript held at Trinity College, is its treasure. St Patrick's Cathedral, Christ Church and the castle complete a compact centre, and Phoenix Park, twice the size of Central Park, borders it to the west.

When to go

May to September for long days and the least rain. It rains in Dublin all year, but rarely for long: the shower is a constant, not an obstacle. St Patrick's Day, 17 March, fills the city.

Getting around

The centre walks entirely. The Luas tram and the buses cover the rest. A Leap card costs markedly less than single tickets.

Where to eat

The Guinness Storehouse is the country's most visited paid attraction — the view from the Gravity Bar at the top earns part of the ticket. Temple Bar is the pub quarter, very touristy and very expensive: the good pubs are a street or two away. Eight halal addresses are listed.

Good to know

Admission runs from 8 to 25 €, a contained range. Book the Book of Kells online; the slots fill. Bring a waterproof jacket rather than an umbrella — the wind here destroys umbrellas.
