Discover Barcelona
Barcelona is a Gaudí city laid over a medieval one, with a beach at the end of it. That collision is the point: you pass from the Gothic Quarter, whose lanes are genuinely medieval, into the Eixample and its modernist façades, in a ten-minute walk. The Sagrada Família, begun in 1882, is still unfinished.
When to go
May, June and September give you the warmth without the August crush, when the city saturates. Winter stays mild and the light on those façades is at its best; only swimming is off the table.
Getting around
The metro is simple and cheap, but the old centre is entirely walkable. Beware deceptive distances: Camp Nou and Park Güell sit at opposite ends of the city, more than 4 km apart — exactly the pairing the planner avoids.
Where to eat
7 Portes and Can Culleretes are local institutions, the latter claiming to have opened in 1786. At the other end, Disfrutar ranks regularly among the world's best restaurants and books out months ahead. Between the two, the real business happens in neighbourhood tapas bars.
Good to know
La Boqueria and several museums close one day a week; the planner arranges days around it. Barcelona has nine city beaches reachable by metro, unusual for a city this size. Around fifteen halal addresses are listed, mostly in El Raval.
